Chocolate and Wine!

Yesterday, I went to San Juan del Obispo to visit a family that makes wine and a family that makes chocolate.  As you could probably guess, the wine part was not so much for me.  BUT, it was interesting to see the different types of fruits that were made into wine.

Banana, blueberry, raspberry, cherry, banana, peach, jocote, coffee, pineapple, grapes, and a more that I can’t remember.  A lot of students tried all of the wines.

After the wine, we moved to the chocolate.  And that was amazing.

They told us about the process to make the chocolate but, unfortunately, they weren’t able to show us the machine(s) they use to make it.  We learned a bit about cacao and sampled a piece of the dried cacao, too.

The woman explaining everything to us, crush some of the seeds on the right and we sampled the inside.  I was surprised how strong (and bitter) it was.  Once the cacao is harvested they melt it down, add sugar, and a flavor (or not).  The chocolate is then patted into discs and set out to dry.  You can use the discs of cacao for hot chocolate as well as for cooking (or just eating).

We sampled all the different flavors and I think I ate about a pound of the chocolate samples.  It’s so good.  I can’t even describe it.  There are many flavors like cinnamon, anis, cardamom, mint, almond, macadamia, chili, ginger, vanilla, coffee, semi-sweet, and I’m sure some others that I can’t remember.

My “sister” (she lives with me at my home stay) bought 12 pounds of chocolate when she went there a few weeks ago.  I managed to get out of there with only buying 3 pounds…natural (no flavor, just chocolate and sugar), macadamia, and vanilla.  Here’s a picture of me with a pound of the vanilla chocolate:

I took that picture tonight on the roof of mi casa.  There’s a roof top deck sort of thing up there and an amazing view.  I’ll give you a tour of the place…sometime.
